A camping holiday on the moors turns into an adventure involving spook trains in the dead of night, strange happenings in a tunnel and a thrilling chase!
Having recovered from the excitement of Five on Kirrin Island Again, Julian, Dick, Anne, their wild cousin George and her faithful dog Timmy are looking forward to 'a super holiday – living in tents on the high moors, away from everybody'. Under the care of Julian and Dick's teacher, Mr Luffy, no-one expects the children to encounter any danger. However, things take an exciting turn when they hear about a 'spook-train' that comes slowly out of an eerie tunnel, only to disappear into the darkness without a trace. Wooden-Leg SamOn the first day of their holiday, the children decide to explore the derelict train yard. Julian, Dick and George can't resist the temptation of playing about with the old trucks that still lie on the rail tracks. However, their noisy antics disturb a strange old man, Wooden-Leg Sam. At first they dismiss him as a harmless madman but when he begins to talk of 'spook trains... what come outa that tunnel by nights all by themselves,' they are intrigued. The Famous Five and FoodAs any 'Five' fan will know, Julian, Dick, George and Anne never go hungry! This adventure is no exception and the descriptions of the delicious, fresh food they buy from a local farm is enough to make anyone's mouth start watering. It is at this farm they first meet Jock but little do they know that Jock's surly stepfather is involved in the mysterious goings on at the deserted train line. Another Famous Five AdventureIt's not long before curiousity gets the better of the four children, even Anne who dreads another adventure. Jock teams up with the five to explore the derelict train yard at night, despite warnings from his grim stepfather to leave well alone. Armed with information from old maps, they are determined to discover the secret behind the trains that seem to disappear into the night. George Loses Her TemperGeorge is well-known for her stubborn, hot-headed temperament. As the adventure begins to unfold, she loses her temper when she is told that she must stay behind with Anne who is feeling scared. This leads to further complications as she storms off with Timmy who falls down a shaft into a deserted tunnel. As George tries to rescue him, she could have no idea that she will soon be rescuing Julian, Dick and Jock from a tricky situation too. Five Go Off to Camp is the seventh story in Enid Blyton's thrilling Famous Five series. It is, like the other stories in the series, a super adventure. However, what makes this particularly interesting is the interplay between the characters and some well-drawn villains. Why not check out Five Get Into Trouble?
