Julian, Dick, Anne, their tomboy cousin George and her loyal friend, Timmy the dog get more than they bargained for when they set off on a caravan holiday.

The four cousins, not forgetting Timmy the dog, are excited to be back together again at the start of the summer holidays. The children are faced with the important decision of what to do for the summer; Anne wants to stay at home, Julian politely suggests staying with George's parents at Kirrin and Dick wishes they could go off in a car. None of these ideas seem to appeal until, inspired by seeing a passing circus parade, George makes the thrilling proposition of going off in a caravan!

Five Go Off in a Caravan

The children are wild with excitement when a thorough investigation of the caravans reveals bunk beds, a tiny sink with running water and all the utensils required to make proper famous five style meals! Having learnt how to ride and look after horses at their boarding schools, the four cousins are perfectly capable of caring for the two horses that will pull their caravans.

The Famous Five Camp

Having decided to make for the hills where the circus is rumoured to have pitched up, Julian, Dick, George and Anne have a pleasant first day. They make their campsite next to a farm which, as famous five tradition dictates, supplies them with new-laid eggs and all sorts of superb fresh produce. The children are delighted when they catch up with the circus and make the acquaintance of Nobby and his chimp, Pongo.

Danger for the Five

The characters of Lou, Nobby’s uncle and his surly companion Dan introduce a hint of danger when they try to scare the children away from their campsite. Julian and his cousins’ suspicions are aroused when, in an apparent change of heart, Lou and Dan invite them to move their caravans nearer to the circus camp. Things take a sinister turn when Barker, one of the circus dogs, becomes seriously ill after consuming a piece of poisoned meat.

Five Have Another Adventure

Much to Anne’s dismay, it looks like the five are involved in yet another adventure when they realize the poisoned meat was intended for Timmy. Things begin to hot up when Lou and Dan pay the children another visit; shortly afterwards the children discover a stash of hidden treasure in a hidden cave beneath their caravans but will they be able to outwit the pair of ruffians?

Five Go Off In a Caravan is the fifth story in the classic Enid Blyton adventure series. Still highly readable despite being originally published in 1946, this book will appeal to all children who have dreamed of enjoying an exciting holiday minus the grown-ups!
