Five Fall Into Adventure

Another Exciting Famous Five Story by Enid Blyton

Oct 18, 2009 Tristania Currie

The Famous Five sense mystery after they meet a strange girl on the beach and Kirrin Cottage is burgled but how will they make the connection between the two incidents?

Julian, Dick, George, Anne and Timmy the dog are together again. It's the school holidays and everyone is excited to be back at Kirrin Cottage. Their last adventure, Five Get into Trouble, is a distant memory and they are just looking forward to relaxing and having fun.

The Famous Five at Kirrin Cottage

The long-suffering Aunt Fanny is exasperated at Uncle Quentin's forgetfulness. He has completely forgotten that they are due to depart for a holiday. The Famous Five are relieved when the grown-ups finally leave and they have two delicious weeks stretching out before them. Joan the cook is there to provide the usual mouthwatering spreads that the children love and Julian, the eldest boy, has been left in charge.

Ragamuffin Jo

Lazy days on the beach, swimming whenever they want and eating ice-creams are the order of the day until they encounter a strange ragamuffin boy who comes to disturb their peace. The boy, who actually turns out to be a girl, Jo, is spoiling for a fight, 'George and the ragamuffin stood scowling at one another, each with fists clenched. They looked so astonishingly alike, with their short, curly hair, brown freckled faces and fierce expressions that Julian suddenly roared with laughter.' Jo eventually stops pestering them but little do the Famous Five realise, they haven't seen the last of her.

George is Kidnapped

It's not long before events take place to upset the relaxed, happy atmosphere. Anne sees a strange face at her window during the night and soon after, to everyone's horror, Kirrin Cottage is ransacked. When Julian, Dick and Anne learn that George has been kidnapped, the race is on to outwit the kidnappers who are demanding important information from Uncle Quentin's scientific research.

Humour in The Famous Five

This is a fast-moving adventure story with several humourous episodes. Perhaps the funniest is the chapter, 'Sid's wonderful evening', where Dick borrows the delivery boy's bike and hat to disguise himself and elude the kidnappers. The delivery boy, Sid, is thrilled to be spending an unexpected evening at Kirrin Cottage playing games and sampling Joan's cooking, 'I'm partial to chocolate mould,' he explained to Anne. 'Joan knows that - she knows I'm partial to anything in the chocolate line. She's friendly with my Mum, so she knows. The things I'm partial to I like very much, see?' Anne giggled and agreed.

I'm constantly thrilled that the Famous Five books are still out there and being read by this generation's children. If they get as much pleasure as I did from these wonderful stories then all's good with the children's fiction world.
